Today we went to the park as a family and during the walk someone pointed out the new trees that had recently been planted at the park. They were planted in clusters of 3, smallish trees. But we’ll take any kind we can get because it is a park that sorely lacks trees as we have observed and commented on many times. The wifey wanted us to go to the park because she felt it would be the last time we could enjoy the park in relative peace and quiet because the nearby road they have been working on for months is finally finished and will open soon. Soon as in today. Out at the park which overlooks the river and therefore has a large expanse of nothing, the sound out there carries incredibly well. So our family enjoyed a nice walk. We pushed the little ones on the swings and some of them rode the electric scooter around, which is an absolute blast for them. All in all it was a fun occasion for the entire family.

However, at one point all three little ones were riding on the scooter at the same time and it would have made for a wonderful photo op and I wished we had taken our digital camera with us to the park. It would have been a great photo to go into the family history book and or to be used within the family tree software that allows for photos to be added. I would have also taken photos of them on the swings.

The other day we took some family photos of the boys playing online games. My older boy loves to play a certain free online game and he plays it a lot, hour after hour. The younger boy hasn’t yet started playing such computer games but if he can sit with the person playing then he likes that. So this one day I wanted my older boy to spend some time with his younger brother, so I suggested we get the younger one his own profile and have the older one teach him how to play. Well, it was a little bit too hard for him, and he couldn’t really do it because the game required right clicking. So the older brother ended up playing for him but he still got to sit on the same chair with big brother while they played. That was exactly what I wanted. So we grabbed a digital camera and took pictures of them playing next to each other. We took the photo from the back so you see the backs of their heads and the chair back and then you see the computer screen with the game they are playing. It is a cute shot of them together and shows the family playing together. Of course we also took some photos of them where they turned their heads to look at the camera. And even I got in some of the shots with them. Just all the boys playing their game.

These will be some good photos to be used in the family tree software that can support photos.

Family Tree Software Progression

Today I learned about a website that uses its family tree software to let users enter some data on their family (or part of their family tree) and then it finds a connecting point in their vast data base of family tree networks so that you can expand your ancestral tree many fold. Pretty neat idea. What you need, as well as what I need, is a program that is easy to install, or not install at all; and so intuitive that you don’t even need to read a manual or instructions. As they say, keep it simple stupid! That is what we all need in family tree software.

Family Tree Software Reviews

How many family tree programs are out there? How many companies provide ways to build your family tree? I’m sure there are dozens and dozens of them. Wouldn’t it be nice to find an unbiased source for family tree software that compared all the tools against each other by someone who had actually used them. You know, which ones are free versus the ones you pay for in a separate category. That is what I want in my family tree software search.

Family History Software vs. Family Tree Software

I have talked much about the difference between family history software and family tree software. One major difference is that the family history programs are built to allow for more story telling and documentation whereas family tree makers consist mainly of charts and data points such as names and dates. Digital family history tools let you organize and preserve many media forms such as video, audio, photos, as well as text. Take for example, the following journal type entries (in italics). Can you imagine how photographs and videos could be intertwined to paint a multimedia family story?

I am so grateful that my husband has a job in a tough economy. A year ago we had to move to a new state to begin a new job.

You can imagine a family photo of them next to a moving truck, or a short video clip of some highlight of the road trip. Family history software can make this easy to assemble.

We had a home that we tried to sell. We were underwater on the mortgage and would either lose money on the sale or have to do a short sale. I began to look at the possibility of renting out our home. We had two choices. The first was to hire a property management company to find a suitable renter or to manage our own property. We decided to try this on our own. The main reason being that we were not going to be able to recoup any additional money in rent to cover the cost of what we owed on the mortgage.

We had other homes in the neighborhood and they were renting for two hundred dollars less than our house payment. So it was not a logical choice for us to pay someone to manage our property when we were putting up additional money toward the mortgage payment. This would not be a profitable decision but one that we hoped to be able to keep our home if we decided to return to live. We listed our home in the local Craigslist for our area or local news channel web site as it is called in our area.

Would it be neat as an artifact in family history software to see a screen image of the actual ad used by the family?

This did not cost us in advertising and I would be able to screen the people who wanted to look at our home. This process took us two months. I had four families come and look at the home. Two of the four took applications which I copied from the internet. I took a security deposit from the family that signed a lease agreement of 12 months. The next step began a legal agreement for them to sign that protected our our property as well as them should damage or fire occur. I had to change our insurance policy to a dwelling fire to cover the property while we were away. At the same time we found a home to rent for the 12 month duration.

Of course, this would be the natural time to display the family out in front of their new home. Some family history software programs can allow for connecting photos with gps coordinates. Think about the children in this family being able, years later as adults themselves with children, to plug in the coordinates into something like google maps to see the very home and neighborhood where they spent those years as a family? Or better yet, plugging the coordinated into a Garmen-like device and be able to actually drive there?

We copied this agreement and had our renters sign the same one. During the 12 months that we managed our home we had several small items that we had to take care of. The heating element in the stove burnt out. The kitchen vertical blinds needed a few replaced. The sprinklers needed adjusting and the shower handle broke in the master bathroom. Because we were in another state we had to figure out how we would be able to fix the problems. We had family nearby that we had pick up the needed items and install or replace for us. We paid them for the time it took. During the summer months we used vacation time to visit as well as fix the sprinklers. We were very fortunate to have been able to find a great family who was careful in the use of our home. They reported problems to us and we were able to fix them quickly.

A powerful family history slideshow or movie could have the person talk in recorded audio about their feelings regarding this family who rented from the person, as it clearly was an important and likely emotional issue.

The tenants paid their rent on time each month. They also cleaned the carpeting upon vacating as we had listed in our agreement. Happily a new job came along and we were able to return to our home after 13 months away. It was easy to fix cosmetic issues and we had a great experience in our first attempt of renting out our home.

A robust family history software package would include perspectives from the children as to their feelings and experience during such a trying time.

Here is the second journal style entry:

I am not very inclined to want to exercise. I suppose it seems boring to me or I have not had the results I have wanted. So when I discovered an exercise program for the Nintendo Wii I decided to try it out. I didn’t want to pay out the $50 price tag and so I looked in my local paper for deals and was able to pick up a used copy that was gathering dust in somebody’s closet. $15 was a much better price for a game that I wanted to try out. I am determined to give it a try for the next 30 days. I am in my mid thirties and would love to slim down. It will be great if I can see some results from this exercise game. In the past I have gone to my local track and walked a few days a week with my son in the stroller. Usually after the first 10 minutes my child would be complaining and It would be tough to work out why trying to keep my child happy too. This time around it is wintertime and I have limited access to transportation and so the walking routine is a bit difficult to do. I am looking forward to exercising in the comfort of my own home and I won’t have a bored child to keep entertained while I do it.

A lot of photos could be used here, showing the family or children out in snowy weather or of them playing together on the entertainment system.

I have also tried to exercise with a treadmill. This has not worked so well for me. I have lots of little children and they always want to try it too and I worry that one of their little hands could get hurt or that they would try it out when I am not there. It was also tough to stay motivated looking at a blank wall or trying to hear the tv over a very loud motor. In the last home I lived in it was difficult to store or move the treadmill around in between using it. I have found that for me I enjoy walking outdoors much better. I enjoy a simple way to exercise and the treadmill just didn’t cut it for me.

My children are now a bit older and so I won’t have the same difficulties I have had in the past. Being able to have the freedom from strollers and children this time around will be refreshing and new for me as I begin an exercise program. I am looking forward to a more healthful energetic me.

Imagine what this might mean for grandchildren and their children to be able to read and see such accounts from their mother or grandmother who lived during the time of such things as the Wii and how she protected and cared for her children. What will family history software and family tree software be like then?

Our little five year old daughter was doing a lot of filming the other day. I think it would make good material for importing into our family history software, and even family tree software if it allows video. She was using our little flip video camera (i don’t know why I call it a flip, perhaps I’m using the wrong term because it does not actually flip in any way). Anyway, it is a simple enough device having only like three or five total buttons, which means she was able to pretty much figure it out after seeing us use it a couple times. She walked from room to room videoing people sleeping in bed, including me.

Then she would play it back, watch it. It was a good educational experience, if I do say so myself.

My daughter wanted to write about something, so I added my own bit, until we started having fun.

My 10 year old sister who acts like 2 years old, sister Sage always steals my books, like my junie b jones books, my book that I got on my other sisters birthday, arie fairy book which is a book about a fairy. I tell my sister to ask for a book but she does not listen. One time she stole almost all of my junie b jones books and read all of them and now she tries to act like junie b jones. One night when i was falling asleep she came in and thought I was asleep, but I caught her and told her to go out.

But she still took it and went out. And it made me mad. Why am I mad at her so much, even though I love her? And she hates it when we write about her in this article. And she shakes her head at us too, and tells us we have bad grammar and wonders what it has to do with shaking her head. And now she honks. Yes you. You are honking like a pig. Good one. Sorry, but it is you.

Balloons and party hats and cupcakes makes it festive. I hope some of the other family members will write more about this day and this event. We took some good family photos and family video with our digital cameras and they will make a great addition to a family scrapbook and can be added to the family history software, and if possible, to the family tree software.

Tonight we loaded the baby in the stroller, put wings on baby girl, and went for a stroll as the sun was low in the sky and there was lots of shade. Middle girl took a bouncy ball which we played with along the way. At the midpoint of the trek there was an empty canal of sorts that the girls played in. I jumped to try to grab a tree limb, almost had it but threw my feet out from under me and fell, twisting up my legs. (Ha! Funny…family tree, get it?) My body is just not quite what it was. Twenty years has taken it’s toll. Of course, most everyone is in the same boat and that’s nothing new. Just new for me.

Late Saturday morning we are going as almost the entire family to grandma’s neighborhood swimming pool. We go pretty regularly and the children love it. The pool is usually pretty cold, and then their is the hot tub that we go back and forth between. Time to put on the sunscreen, which most of them are old enough that they are pretty good about. We recently bought some sunscreen on sale, and one kind is a spray that is supposed to be no more bother in the eyes than water. And it is an spf of 50! We have taken plenty of photos and video of them frolicking in the water at the pool. Lot’s of fun and good times.

Inasmuch as we don’t have a computer for each of our children, they must share a single computer. As you can imagine, there is often a lot of arguing and complaining around the issue. Today, the older boy started yelling upstairs to his mom and dad, telling on his sister for not leaving the computer when it was his turn. He did it once and again and again. Too much for mom and dad. Our knee jerk reaction was to have none of them use it if they can’t share it nicely. So we yelled down that they don’t get to use the computer for a week.

Needless to say, they were not very happy at all with that. Older boy complained as he stormed into his room. But it seems they realized right away why they received that consequence. After about five minutes, younger sister came in and told us she had gone to apologize to big brother, then he had apologized to her. Unfortunately, we must keep with the aforementioned consequence. Right now, little sister is reading this and mildly laughing. Now a bigger laugh.

The exception to the ‘no computer for a week’ consequence is that she will be able to use the computer to write a report that is due on Thursday.
